Sunflower seed – (lot. Helianthus) - aster family plants gentle. For greek „helios“ – is the sun, and „anthos“ – flower, big truss looks like the sun, also usually they turn to suns side. This is annual or biennial grasses, sometimes grows underground tubers (artichokes). Staff is vertical, leaves overgrown with roughly naps. Composite middle size or very large. Outside flowers are without seeds and internal – productive.
There are above 60 kinds populated in North America. There are two kinds in Lithuania:
· Simple sunflower (Helianthus annuus).
· Potatous sunflower or Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus).
Sunflower seeds are used in confectionary, bread and gasrtonomy industry.
